ゆきくれて木の下かげを宿とせば花やこよひのあるじならまし

“If I make the shade

of this tree my inn,

when night falls

these blossoms would be

my innkeeper” (Miller and Donnelly 2013, 13)

ビルマではそうはいかぬ

Not so in Burma.

ビルマの雑草の中にはノミが蔓り、青天井伸したに蘘る者を襲って人間界の敵よりも恐ろしい害をする。

Fleas infest the weeds of Burma, attacking those who climb up to the tops of the green-ceilinged trees and doing more terrible harm than their enemies in the human world.

ビルマで木の下を宿とする者は『ビルマ病』なるものにかかり、貫通銃創どころではなく、かかったら必ず片破になるという。

It is said that those who lodge under trees in Burma suffer from “Burmese Disease,” where a penetrating gunshot wound always results in a crippling wound

寢醒め勝ちな兵は敵が近づくや直ちに起きて戦闘配置に就くが、『ビルマ病』なるものは予告も前兆もなくやって来て隙を覗い寝込みを襲うのである。

Sleepy soldiers can wake up and get ready for battle as soon as the enemy approaches, but the “Burmese Disease” arrives without warning, searching for an opening, attacking them in their sleep.

銃剣創は綺麗さっぱりとしていて、その上銃剣で襲う敵と渡り合う事が出来る。

Gun or sword wounds are clean, moreover, you can fight with an enemy who attacks you with either.

然し『ビルマ病』は体中に出物腫物が出来てとても繃帯では間に合わない。『ビルマ病』を持って来る敵は捜査する譯にはいかず斥候を出して監視する事も出来ない。

However, the “Burmese Disease” causes boils and rashes all over the body, and a bandage is not enough.

銃剣がある限り兵は人間界の敵と戦えるが、『ビルマ病』に対しては何にもならぬ。

If they have guns and swords, soldiers can fight the enemies of the human world, but they can do nothing against the “Burmese disease.

相常の衛生給養なしに兵はどうしてこの敵と戦えるか？

How can the soldiers fight this enemy without regular hygiene and nutrition?

一本槍でもいかず、機智をめぐらせて包囲したり伏兵したりしてもこいつを倒す事はできない。

You can't defeat this thing with pure persistence, nor can you defeat it with resourcefulness, encirclement, or ambush.

一旦掌中に陥ったら人間界の敵同志だったら武勇の響高い勇士を人間並に尊敬したり讃えたりするが、この『ビルマ病』なる奴はそんな人間味などは持合わせていない。

Once under their control, human enemies in the human world would respect and admire warriors who are renowned for their valor, but this “Burmese disease” has no such human feelings.

慈悲も容赦もなくこいつは人間の命を喰󠄀いつぶしていく。

Without compassion or forgiveness, this thing devours human life.

平忠度は一夜を桜樹の下に明かして翌日は晴れの戦場で倒れた。

然しビルマの木陰に寝る者は惨めな死にさいなまれる。

But those who lie in the shade of the Burmese trees are condemned to a miserable death.
