After Germany and Italy have gone

どこの国でも首脳部が重要問題を決定し兵士はその命令に従い一意専心その本分を尽くす如く教育訓練されて来たのである。

In every country, leaders make decisions on important issues, and soldiers are educated and trained to follow their orders and do their duty single-mindedly.

然し首脳部において誤った命令を出した場合どんな結果になるだろうか。

But what would be the consequences if the wrong orders were given at the top?

或は国家の盛衰は勿論一兵士の運命といえどもこれにより左右せられるのではなかろうか。

The rise and fall of a nation, or even the fate of a soldier, may depend on this.

日本軍部の犯した誤算は最近益々表面化し今や疑う余地もない程になった。

The miscalculations of the Japanese military have recently come to the surface more and more, and are now beyond doubt.

首脳部では英米を敵に廻して単独戦争する事は到底勝運なき事を良く承知していた筈である。

The top leadership must have understood going to war alone against the United Kingdom and the U.S. would be an unmitigated disaster.

それでこそ冒険的にも独伊と軍事同盟を結んだのである。

This is why they risked the military alliance with Germany and Italy.

ヨーロッパでも独逸と伊太利が連合国を相手に戦争をして連合国の主力をヨーロッパに集中させれば日本の戦う敵の勢力は僅かなものだろうと考えたに違いない。

In Europe, Germany and Italy must have thought that if they could wage war against the Allies and concentrate the main Allied forces in Europe, Japan would have only a small force of enemies to fight against.

然しながら結局どうなっただろう。

But how did it turn out in the end?

伊太利は早くも敗れ連合国は独逸本土にある。

Italy was quickly defeated, and the Allies are in the German homeland.

間もなく連合国の総勢力が日本に向い集中されんとしている危急存亡の時にあたり果して日本は孤独の念を覚えないであろうか。

At this life and death moment when the total power of the Allied Powers is about to be concentrated at Japan, will Japan not feel lonely?
