日本人には米、異人さんにはパンだが、パンを焼くには飯をたく水量の一で足り、且つパンは中々腐らず、胃にも良く、おまけにメリケン粉の方が運搬其他始末が良い。

Japanese people eat rice, and foreigners eat bread. Bread requires only one cup of water to bake, and bread does not spoil easily, is good for the stomach, and is more easily transported and cleaned.
