沖縄喪失の教えるもの

Lessons from the Loss of Okinawa

六月廿二日沖縄本島は陥落した。

On June 2022, the main island of Okinawa fell.

太平洋戦はじまって以来の多数の日本陸海軍将兵約九千余名が、其戦の末期に及び衆寡敵しがたきを悟り降服の挙に出で、米軍は礼を以てこれを迎えた。

Over 9,000 Japanese Army and Navy officers and men, the largest number since the beginning of the Pacific War, realized in the final stage of the war that they could no longer stand against all odds and began to surrender, with U.S. forces welcoming them with open arms and courtesy.

この沖縄本島戦の教えるもの之は日本側総帥部のけっして無視し能はざる所「今度の戦争はこりゃ負だぞ」と云う印象は今や日本軍將兵の間に漲っている。

The Japanese General Staff cannot ignore the lessons of the Battle of Okinawa, and the impression that "this war is a lost cause" now pervades the ranks of the Japanese military commanders.

高級幹部はよろしく此の勢を察し軍の體面を汚すことなく速に戦を止めるにする。

High-ranking officers will take note of the situation and quickly halt the war without tarnishing the military's reputation.

狐疑逡巡すれば無駄に人を殺し、また国を破る。

Indecision and hesitation will needlessly kill people and also ruin your country.

沖縄は本土を去る僅か五百六十粁、飛行距離にして二時間足らず、既に数ヶ所の太平洋方面切っての大飛行場の建設が着々進められていり、戦斗機、爆撃機のかずかずが終結を開始し、日本々土爆撃は今や日常事かさんとしている。

Okinawa is only 560 kilometers away from the mainland, a mere two hours' flight, ｃconstruction of several major airfields in the Pacific is already underway, countless fighters and bombers have begun executing bombing runs over Japan, and raids are a daily occurrence.

事態かくの如きに際し責任ある人々は真に国民、国家の為になる途を取るべきである。

In such a situation, those who are responsible should take steps that are truly in the best interest of the people and the nation.
