米空軍東京を猛爆

The U.S. Air Force heavily bombed Tokyo

三月九日に超要塞機三百機が再び東京を空襲し、無数の焼夷弾を投下して軍事工業施設に大打撃を与えた。

On March 9, 300 super-fortress bombers again attacked Tokyo, dropping countless incendiary bombs that caused heavy damage to military and industrial facilities.

更に米空軍は二十七日、同規模の大空襲を東京一帯に敢行し、発電所、格納庫、航空機製作所等を粉砕した。

Furthermore, on the 27th, the US Air Force carried out a large-scale air raid on the Tokyo area, destroying power plants, hangars, aircraft factories, etc.

現在の空爆は来るべき日本々土作戦の準備工作の一部に過ぎぬのである。

米軍の東京攻撃と時を同じくして、米軍海兵隊は日本の心臓部より僅か千二百粁の硫黄島に上陸した。

堅固に要塞化された硫黄島には去る二月十九日以来熾烈なる戦闘が続けられていたが、損傷をものともせず戦果を拡大して行く米軍海兵隊の猛進撃に日本軍の同島防衛は絶望視されるに到った。
